Prairie Chapel ... the original community founded by Heinrich Engelbrecht

The Prairie Chapel Rural School District was established in 1885 according to the Texas Historical Commission plaque in front of the school. German imagrant and Civil War veteran, Heinrich Engelbrecht donated the land that this school was built on in 1908. It is a three room building contained a water well, hitching post for horses and a wood burning stove. The school and Canaan Baptist Church (one mile west) were important social centers for the community.

The original well and pump still works at the Prairie Chapel School!

Sitting on high ground on the prairie is Canaan Baptist Church. Early services were spoken in German in this church that was built on land donated by Heinrich Engelbrecht. Members of the original Engelbrecht family still attend this church.
